Vientiane




City Information

       Vientiane is the capital of Lao’s People Democratic Republic, located on Mekong River Basin at position 17°58' North, 102°36' East (17.9667, 102.6) . Its urban population was about 200,000 in 2005 but it was believed that the total number of people within the wall of Vientiane City was over 730,000.

History

       King Chaiya Setthathirath established Vientiane as a capital of the Kingdom of Lan Xang since 1560. As the Kingdom of Lan Xang declined in 1707, Vientiane became independent called the Kingcome of Lan Xang Vientiane. Till 1778, Chao Phaya Chakri from the Thonburi Kingdom defeated Laos and Vientiane had been under Thonburi Kingdom since then.

       In 1826, King Anouvong, the last King of Vientiane, tried to collect troops for a rebellion and liberate the country of Thonburi Kingdom. So Thonburi Kindgom delivered troops to conquer Vientiane and caught King Anouvong for a punishment in Bangkok and destroyed Vientiane, only some important temples left such as Haw Phra Kaeo and Wat Sisaket.

       In 1893, Laos was under France, Vientiane was set as a administration center of Laos under command of France in 1899. Later after the independence from France, Vientiane has been the capital of Laos till the present time.

Agreement

       Vientiane, the capital of Lao’s People Democratic Republic, signed on the Sister City Agreement with Bangkok by Mr. Samak Sundaravej (Governor of Bangkok) and H.E. Thongsing Thammavong (Mayor of Vientiane) on the 24th May 2004 at Bangkok. The relationship of both cities has been very well since the agreement signing till the present time.
